Meeting a Nymph
Dark stormy
nights were common in Harpartia but somehow today felt different as if strange
winds were blowing across the dark blue skies; Daurias was a peasant by nature
he worked in pig pens to earn a living at the age of ten, yet he never appeared
as such. Many of the village’s young women found him intriguing, charming and
eligible. He never thought much of himself though. His father died the night he
was born he was at war because he was the commanding officer of the tenth unit.
His mother never spoke of him. Daurias could see it hurt her too much so he
never asked, then after some long hard years without much money to support them
she had fallen extremely ill while he was out working.
Eight years later on his night off, rain hadn’t
started to fall yet so he decided to talk a stroll, about ten kilometres into
the forest; he discovered an old house near the clearing in the forest covered
by old leafs, vines, rocks and fallen parts of a tree. Slowly he began clearing
the vines and blocks of stone away from the door of the old house and then he
saw a small opening behind the block which he had been attempting to move. As
he struggled to move the rock it slid like a ball and rolled gently across the
forest floor.
He looked on in amazement at the spectacle then turned
to face the opening of the house that had been barred by the rock. There was a
strange light, not that the light itself was strange but it seemed to want to
trap anyone looking at it, in its glow. He while looking at the strange light
he remembered the day his mother died when she whispered to him, with her last
dying breath “My son you are more precious than you perceive, even the earth
knew when you had arrived here, but you shall know when your time is at hand,
it shall be revealed to you, use your gifts well and remember where you came
from and never ever give up you must promise me this Daurias”, “yes mother I
promise I will never give up”, then she died, could this be what she meant?, he
wondered. What he should do. He heard hoofs galloping closer along the edge of
the woods he knew it was the soldiers looking for anyone disobeying the curfew
the king had given, before he could think he jumped into the house and hid.
After a while the sound of footsteps faded into the
forest, the wind howled viciously. He looked behind him remembering the light
he’d seen. He got up slowly trying to make as little noise as possible, but
forgot to look where he was going and wacked his head with a loud thud on the
cupboard top which had been left open.
Giggling flooded the room but Daurias is not afraid or
startled but rather he is intrigued by the sight of little lights glowing all
over the room. “This is strange… lights don’t laugh” he says. One light floated
closer to him he notices the distinct shape of a person in the light, the
person says, “Why can’t lights laugh Dauiras??” “How do you know me, light person
thing?” Daurias asks. The person asks
“How do you know I am a person?” Daurias responds “I can see the shape of a
person in the light and obviously lights don’t speak” “Very well then, I am
Ariel, but call me Ariel. I am a head nymph in the counsel of Myradia and I
know that you are Daurias Turnner because there is no other is there?”
Ariel got larger and the light around her faded away.
She was really beautiful, her white robe had little blue sparkles on it and
frills on the ends, fell at her feet and neat golden hair in a Victorian hair
style. “Follow me, I know you have been searching for answers into your past
let me show you.” she says in an octave unknown to man, yet it is as warm as
sunlight but also ghostly as the wind on a winter’s eve. He could not help but
admire and long to hear her speak.
Daurias stiffened at the touch of Ariel’s hand she
felt icy cold but it was strange a hint of warmth that sort of tingled, her
hands felt amazing. She led him through a door that wasn’t there before or at
least he hadn’t noticed it before now. It had a length of ten feet and fifty
meters across, it looked like it was made out of oak and the frame work is ancient
he looked at its work in awe.
As they entered the door he found himself
dizzy and almost unconscious, he heard Ariel’s faint voice telling him he would
be ok and it happens to all humans entering their world. Then he passed out.
His eye lashes were bating while his eyes tried to adjust to the bright light.
His head spun wildly. When his eyes adjusted he saw blond hair above him. “Ariel
what happened? I just fainted”, his strong English accent could be heard, Ariel
looked at him and opened her mouth to answer him but then she noticed him, his eyes,
they were the exact colour of a winter night, hands soft but firm, lips full
and held the most luring smile, his face, had sharp neat cut lines, distinct
cheekbone structure, the most seductive whisper of perfectly sculpted body,
which held a certain soft smooth feel, he smelt like sweet berries and
cinnamon. His hair was as silk and not very long. He was almost perfect as the first one
described him. Blotemas walked into the room and eyed Dauiras with a smug
expression, “Has he awakened?” asked Blotemas. “Yes my lord” answered Ariel
“Finally I almost assumed you’d killed the boy, Ariel, have him dressed and
ready to meet the counsel in 2000 quats”. He turned abruptly and left.
“What are quats Ariel?” Dauiras ask
curiously. “It is as I believe what humans call minutes” they both exchanged
looks of confusion at the words not familiar to each. “Come on now let’s not
waste anytime we have to get you to the counsel at once they have no patience
for tardiness.” “Wait, wait, what am I here for why are you taking me to see a
counsel, Ariel wait!” he yelled after her but she had already gone into the
other room. He attempted to run after
her firstly because of the fear of losing her and secondly because he didn’t
know where in the marshy grassland he was. Only one thing stopped him. As he
jumped of whatever he was lying down on.
He started walking but realized there was an excessive amount of
ventilation around him. “Oh breezes!” he yelled and ran back to his resting
place. Ariel returned looking alarmed “What has been the matter Dauiras?” “Where-Are-Clothes!”
he said breathlessly. “Oh yes I know I took them off you cannot be seen wearing
those clothes the guardians will have you executed.
“Killed!”, “calm down you will be fine I am
here to make sure this never happens, first the council meeting then I shall
show you how creatures in this world have fun ok”. He looked at her trying to
comprehend what she just told him then he replied with much hesitation “Fine
but I must return to my home afterward if the army knew of this place all this
will be desecrated and turned to dust before King Arthur of Tyrone.” “He who hates all non-human creatures shall
turn himself against his own kind” she said knowingly of Arthur of Tyrone. She
gave him clothes worn in Asquinese they were silky and porous he put them on
and hurried through the door and into the village street. “Wow this is surreal”
he said as he strolled behind Ariel. He tried not to stare at these strange
persons passing by while on their own errands. As Arial and Dauiras entered the
counsel room, members stood and bowed upon their arrival. Dauiras wondered why
he was just about to ask Ariel why they had done this, when a young man about
his age, slender white hair although he was very young, he wore a breastplate
and sword and wore a huge ring with a crest on it but it looked inherited
because it was pure gold but yet noticeably worn out. The young man stood tall and
proud he was a little intimidating. Ariel smiled warmly at him and curtseyed.
He took her hand and kissed it. He must have realized Dauiras staring and
pulled out his sword so swiftly Dauiras only blinked and looked at the young
man in awe at his speed and precision. He did not so much as touch a blade of
Ariel’s blond hair with his sword.
Dauiras didn’t even breathe. He couldn’t
move. Then the suddenly the young man smiled as warmly as Ariel did to him. He
lowered his sword and moved away from Ariel. “I am prince Excasliver, Matt
Excasliver; you may address me as Matt or Sir it is quite alright and I believe
you have met my lovely bride Princess Arielsyansa, what pray tell, shall I address you as my
friend?” he smiled as he asked which felt comforting to Dauiras. Dauiras stood
as tall as he could like he had a mountain of honour and said “I am Dauiras of
the province of Harpartia it is a pleasure to address you Prince Matt Sir and
the lovely and kind Princess Arielsyansa.” The counsel and the princess and
prince laughed with great joy at this boy called Dauiras.
After a long and debated meeting Dauiras
was given permission to stay until he decided to leave or become Glaidiona’s
knight. Two of the guards escorted Dauiras to his room and told him where to meet
the Royals and the time also what he should wear. Just as Dauiras was about to
open the door there was a knock at the door he jumped over his bed to open the
door expecting Ariel at the door. But it
was not. Dauiras was quite curious to see what a party with nymphs would be
like. He entered the large wooden door half expecting a renaissance get up. He
stood looking at everything with his mouth wide. It was a rave party. He had
never seen this type of magical globe shining in different colours and the room
was ancient he could tell by the wooden carvings on the wall and the way the
stone blocks were made. The room was a master piece just like the castle in
which it was housed.
There was a girl singing. She
looked at him. She noticed him. He looked at her. He suddenly got a funny
feeling in his guts. As soon as the feeling came she looked away and it was
gone. He longed to see her again. She was the colour of mocha, her eyes like
pure hazel. She was slim but well formed and shapely. Her hair was long to the
mid section of her back and it was dark but shiny brown. Her lips were full and
pink; she had the smile of a thousand rays of sunshine. She was beautifully
magnificent. He could tell because he knew pure mastery when he saw it and the
girl and the room were of that standard. While admiring the girl on stage
Dauiras didn’t notice Prince Matt looking at him. He felt a sharp thud on his
arm he spun wildly around to see the princes’ smiling face overjoyed at his
clumsiness. Matt laughed whole heartedly at Dauiras, Dauiras then laughed at
himself. Matt’s left eyebrow raised slightly, he wasn’t looking at Dauiras but
behind him. Dauiras turned to see what was looking at. When he turned he didn’t
see anything or anyone just a dark corner of the room where no one stood or
went near to. He wondered why Matt looked so concerned about a dark corner.
Matt said “I’ will be back, please excuse me, Dauiras” without looking away
from the corner he left. And with that Dauiras
turned back looking at the lively celebrations. As he looked on he couldn’t
help but miss his home and his old friends, although they were animals and
could not share a kind word they were good listeners. He smiled at the thought
of them listening to him; it seemed silly now.
“Hello there!” a strange voice said he looked up to see the beautiful
girl he’d been looking at while she was singing a while ago. “Hey” said with a
smile. She smiled at him. Why would she talk to me? He thought. “Because I
wanted to know why you looked at me like that”. What in kamala’s name? How did
she know..., you’re being silly she can’t read minds that- that’s imp...
“Impossible? Nothing is
impossible stranger” she said with a smile. “You can hear my thoughts too if
you want to.” “I can? Wow, how is that possible?” she placed her hands on his
brow and then placed her left hand on her forehead and whispered something.
She was thinking about him
and about him asking her to dance to the next song. He laughed and so did she. “May I have this
dance.... ummm?” “Maya, just call me Maya.” She said with a pleasant smile.
“Yes you may have this dance sir Dauiras”.
He led her to the dance floor. He didn’t even look where he was going.
They stood in the middle but he didn’t notice.
The song started a symphony of violins it was amazing. He put his hand on the small of her back. He
felt her hair. It was long and soft. They danced to the slow song feeling like
this was what they both had been waiting for, to be in this place, at this
moment, with each other, dancing to this
song. Maya’s eyes were a mystery to him, but she thought the same about him. He
bent to kiss her and the song ended. “What just happened?” he said astonished
at the abrupt ending of their unforgettable moment. She laughed at him. “Hey
there I see you are enjoying yourself.” It was Ariel, he was happy to see her.
“Oh yeah I am, you all can really party”. “Told you, and you have meet the
lovely and talented Maya. How are you Maya? That sound was absolutely splendid
the Royals are pleased.” Ariel said
with her usual warm smile. “Oh thank you Princess Ariel, I am delighted to hear
that my performance pleased you all.” Maya said and bowed. Ariel smiled, “You
always do Maya, and all Knights are to meet the council tomorrow at 1500 quats.
Well I am to be going now Matt and I are to attend a fitting for our wedding
gowns, and Dauiras if you need anything just call ok, I am leaving you in the
capable hands of Maya, and Maya see to it that you both attend the meeting on
time ok. Bye now” and Ariel disappeared before them. Maya and Dauiras made their way through the
archway at the back of the hall and made their way outside into the cool air of
the night. They talked about almost everything.
It had been fifty days since
Dauiras found that old abandoned house, now he did not even remember why he
wanted to go back to his world. He had agreed to stay and help the people he
now called his friends. Today was Bilasyt; it was their word for Friday. Toady was the day he was going to take Maya
out to the lake for dinner, Ariel had suggested this location. Tomorrow Ariel and Matt were to be married
and the entire kingdom was invited, seven royal families from neighbouring
nations were also to attend this galore event. “Dauiras come on its time for
you fitting.” “Fitting?” “Yes you are one of the groom’s men remember?” with a
chuckle he nodded and went with Ariel to the fitting. He looked absolutely
dashing in his dark purple tuxedo. Ariel’s wedding dress was teal with a purple
bouquet. Her blond hair made the outfit
sparkle and she looked like a true princess nymph of the earth. Maya was at her
fitting also. As soon as Maria the seamstress was done they both ran away to
the lake away from all the wedding excitement. Dauiras had Cloe’, his friend from the
restaurant make some traditional Myradian food, for his date and Theo helped
him make a small canoe for two. He was all set for today. He still felt like he
forgot something though, but he shock the feeling.
He settled with Maya into the
canoe and started to row the boat into the middle of the massive lake. As he
did so Maya started singing the song that she had sung for the party, on the
first night he arrived. It was the first
time she sang it since that night. When
she had ended the song it was quiet, only the wind blowing slowly across the
lake. They looked at each other for at least a minute. “This is a beautiful
view of the lake, I have never been out this far.” “It is, Ar... umm I thought
it might be nice and you’d enjoy it” he smiled but was slightly embarrassed
because Theo told him not to mention anyone who helped him, he said “It’s gonna
spoil the mood bro.” They ate Poilop; it’s like bread except it is made with
flowers and the nectar from the flowers so it is sweet and has a tangy taste to
it, but whatever colour flowers you use that’s the colour it will be, Yudscap
is made from Clityre which is like sheep in human world its boiled and then
mixed with something that makes it spicy and red. Glattseed, it is like cake
and they have Szatered which translates as wine back home they are all tasty. “I’m thinking of staying here Maya, your world
has been much more kind to me than mine ever was most of the time.” He said as
he gazed of into his mind. “Daurias, do you want to know why you are really
here, who you are truly?” “What do you mean, Ariel and Matt told.....” “They
withheld the entire truth from you, the one thing you should really know about
yourself,” “Why tell me this now Maya can’t it wait till after their wedding
tomorrow?” “ Listen to yourself, they’ve
brain washed you what happened to the boy who always wanted to know, who was
never afraid to ask a question DAUIRAS WHERE DID HE GO?” she made the boat turn
itself around and carry itself back to
the shoreline. She was about to leave
when he grabbed her arm. “You’re right I’m sorry. Let’s go now okay”. They left
in a hurry before anyone could come looking for them because it was getting to
be very late. She led him into the
Royals’ castle without make a sound. Then they walk through some giant stone
walls. Maya whispered an enchantment then told Daurias not to move because this
room is sprinkled with traps. She disarmed all except two because the Royals
were the only ones who could access it and they would know if anyone tried to
break their seals.
